Excellent band, bad timing
Growing up I witnessed the regional success of this band, unfortunately they did not reach National fame despite having a record deal with a mojor label (Atlantic.) Mighty Joe Plum is from Tampa, Fl and gained minor success after having won a battle of the bands competition. They cut an EP and many Florida radio stations started playing their song "Live Through This (15 Stories) the song was very well written and achieved much success in the South East. The band toured with some big 90's artists such as Creed, Matchbox 20, Foo Fighters, Toad the Wet Sproket, and Seven Mary Three. They never received national fame which is a shame as they were a very solid band, they would have been huge had they come out a few years earlier. Their sound is very close to bands like earlier Matchbox 20, Blues Traveller, and Better Than Ezra, the problem was that these bands were already well established and that whole sound was starting to evolve when Mighty Joe Plum came on the scene. The Happiest Dogs would be their only album, the album was produced very well and the songs are written with a lot of emotion and intellegent lyrics. Each song on the album could very easily stand on its own while Live Through This seems as though it was written to be played on the radio. The songs are a mix of electric and acoustic guitar with driving bass lines and powerful guitar, each track is very well recorded and written with passion. Irish, I Fell In, and Lumberjack are just a few that stand out to me, any song on the album would have very easily fit in on the sound track of just about any classic 90's movie. I would recommend this album to anyone who is a fan of 90's music that is of the highest quality and smartly written and excecuted. I've heard that Mighty Joe Plum is back together and working on new material, I hope this is the case and they can achieve greater success the 2nd time around.
