  I've had the first version of HRM from Garmin several years ago. I think this is the next version up. I didn't want to pay for the newest. This is more comfortable than the first. I'm sure it will last too. Plus you can just replace the strap if you need or if you can find one.

  I am happy that you received your item undamaged and in good shape, This was a brand new item that was packaged in its retail packaging and inside of a shipping box with padding.
