Brian Smith (Colin Firth) is an obsessed fan and a frustrated writer who stalks the famous actor Cesar Valentin (Peter O'Toole) and then kills him. Smith himself is killed shortly afterwards, and this is where the story really begins. The afterlife turns out to be an improvement for Smith as he discovers that social standing and perks are based on a new measure of fame. As afterlife goes on, Valentin finds himself forgotten and his accommodations downgraded, and the previously frustrated writer, who has gained notoriety for his crime, moves up.
