Stan Levey enjoyed a long and varied career, marked by success and ingenuity in many fields. Starting out as a boxer, he soon switched to the drums, and played in bebop bands with the likes of Charlie Parker, Coleman Hawkins, Oscar Pettiford, and many others. Moving to Los Angeles in 1954, Levey became a prominent force on the west coast bebop scene, and later became a member of numerous film and television studio bands. Here, the fascinating musician whose path has crossed countless historical and musical legends recounts his experiences of the early jazz world. Having been one of the main storytellers in Ken Burns's Jazz documentary, Levey entertains with tales of playing with the Parker/Gillespie group on 52nd Street in New York, as well as Howard Rumsey's Lighthouse All-Stars, among others. Accompanied by music, archive film clips, and photographs taken by William Claxton and Herman Leonard, the documentary features appearances by Dizzy Gillespie, Miles Davis, Charlie Watts, Quincy Jones, Hank Jones, Bill Holman, Lee Konitz, Howard Rumsey, Terry Gibbs, Bill Henderson, and Charlie "Bird" Parker himself.Product Identifiers
