Just after the release of Soundgarden's major-label debut for A&M, 1989's Louder Than Love, original bassist Hiro Yamamoto left the band, and for the ensuing tour, ex-Nirvana guitarist Jason Everman filled in. Midway through the tour in 1990, Everman was sacked in favor of Ben Shepherd, but the brief lineup of Everman-Cornell-Thayil-Cameron is featured on the 50-minute home video Louder Than Live from 1990. Five live performances are featured from a concert at L.A.'s Whisky (shot in black and white, with many repeated shots fitting repetitive sections of songs), while two promo clips close the collection. The heavy metal stompers "Get on the Snake," "Gun," and "Big Dumb Sex" will please the band's metalhead following, while a humorous medley comprised of Spinal Tap's "Big Bottom" and Cheech & Chong's "Earache My Eye" shows that Soundgarden didn't take themselves too seriously. The psychedelicized "I Awake" is also featured, while the bland promo clips for "Loud Love" and "Hands All Over" unfortunately do not rank as Soundgarden's best. But for fans of early Soundgarden, Louder Than Live is still recommended. ~ Greg Prato
