Product Information
After completing his trilogy of flamenco dance films, BLOOD WEDDING, CARMEN and LOVE, THE MAGICIAN, Carlos Saura left the rarified world of Lorca and Bizet to present a wide-ranging display of flamenco song and dance in SEVILLANAS. Working without a plot, this film is more of a variety show than a documentary. Saura simply lets the artists perform and uses little or no background or stage effect. The variety is amazing: There are solos, duets and ensemble pieces by both guitarists and dancers. These are presented in the familiar flamenco style, with heads thrown back and eyes flashing as bodies circle each other in erotic challenges. The music has the familiar sound associated with the work of Manuel de Falla but also includes traditional Andulusian folk songs and ballads. The title, SEVILLANAS, refers to the style of music and dance associated with gypsy culture. Seville, in Andalucia, has Spain's highest concentration of gypsies. But what Saura does here, by showing so many artists who are not amateurs but who are in touch with everyday life in Spain, is to reveal the way the music and dance of the gypsy minority has become an indistinguishable part of the larger culture of Spain.Product Identifiers
