The Seagate Momentus XT 750GB internal hard disk drive combines the best features of mechanical hard disk drives with those of SSHD units. This hybrid drive has boot and data processing times comparable to SSDs by way of its NAND flash components. It also has all of the same data storage components and high capacity of HDDs. With an RPM measure of 7200 RPM, you can expect SATA supported transfer rates of up to 6Gb/s. This Seagate disk has 32MB of buffer space in its cache. This big buffer translates into an average seek, read, and write speed of 11.0 and 13.0 ms respectively. The 2.5-inch form factor of the ST750LX003 makes it a practical upgrade choice for laptop hard drive caddies.Seagate ran extensive tests to make sure that desktop systems with 2.5-inch drive bays would access the full 750GB of capacity as well. Apart from laptop and mobile applications, the Momentus works well for high-performance gaming computers and multimedia editing workstations. These machines can use additional software buffers to send recently used information to faster flash memory. The access times for game data or video files working exclusively from the SSD half of the drive would be close to instantaneous.Once the computer gets shut down, each of these buffers writes all of the data straight to the Momentus controller. Engineers from Seagate designed the controller to manipulate data appropriation. It decides which data gets permanently stored in the standard HDD section of the volume and which goes to the SSD portion. None of these decisions will impact the amount of memory the OS uses. Seagate Momentus technology also makes decisions about the way the SSD-like portions of the ST750LX003 handle wear leveling.Individual NAND cells have a limited number of writes, so the Momentus spreads out usage over the entire solid state area. This extends the life of the microchip-based portion of the hybrid drive. All mechanical hardware parts are designed to last as long as the electronic components without performance losses over time. The platters themselves also have a long lifespan.These additional performance tweaks make this a handy second disk for laptops that boot from an installed disk. It's even compatible for RAID technology when it's installed alongside at least one other disk. Windows users can easily configure this drive to work with NTFS. It's also compatible with the ext3 and ext4 file systems used by GNU/Linux system software. It can support multiple partitions if you plan to use both operating systems. Single partitions can take up the entire capacity or a portion as small as merely 8GB. Its design makes it possible to create a 500GB partition for Windows while still leaving more than enough space for a second operating system.Computers allocated to a completely Unix-based userspace can see additional performance gains through use of the extended file system on this disk. It's optimized for use with open-source OS code. This optimization can also work with users of FreeBSD and NetBSD.
