Geese Howard is at it again. He has made arrangements for another tournament, and has called out for the best fighters around. He wants to defeat them all and rule South Town once more. Players can choose from 13 characters, including old-time Fatal Fury favorites Terry Bogard and Mai Shiranui. Then they must fight through all the other characters in the game to get to a final showdown with Geese Howard. The game employs what is called a three-line system for fighting. Fighters typically engage each other in the center line, but can pop into the foreground or background lines quickly to evade attacks, or to launch a line crossing attack. Fights cannot be conducted in the foreground and background lines, and players will eventually be forced back into the center line if they do not return voluntarily. Fighters each have a health bar that's actually composed of two overlapping bars. To defeat their opponents, fighters must drain both the yellow and red health bars. Each fighter also has a power meter that can be charged up. Once their bars are charged, fighters can perform desperation moves at the cost of draining the meter. If the meter is charged and the fighter's health is low enough for his or her life bar to flash, that fighter can perform a "super desperation move" that inflicts even more damage. Real Bout Fatal Fury introduces ring-outs to 2D fighters. Each of the regular stages has some kind of barrier at each of its edges. If the barrier is broken, fighters can then be thrown or hit out of the ring, with the fighter remaining in the ring being victorious. If both fighters end up out of the ring, the one who went out last is considered the victor.
