Vikki Grimm has opened a portal through time and needs help returning home in Portal Runner for the Game Boy Color. A spin-off of 3DO's Army Men series, Portal Runner is a side-scrolling platform game that takes place within seven realms: Castle, Forest, Dungeon, Volcano, Jungle, Spaceship, and Land of Toys. Each locale consists of multiple levels and culminates in a boss encounter.<br><br>Levels also feature various enemies specific to the region. Wolves, bats, ghosts, and knights, for example, overrun the Castle Realm, while scorpions, hornets, and giant spiders populate the Jungle Realm. To combat these threats, Vikki can use a combination of hand-to-hand moves as well as three different kicks. Obstacles and certain enemies can also be avoided by simply jumping over them, and creatures from afar can be targeted with bow and arrows. <br><br>Vikki can fire two types of arrows: green and the more powerful red arrows, which fire three explosive projectiles at once. Red arrows are limited, however, and must be reacquired as a power-up. Other power-ups include 1-Ups for extra lives, Rubies to open up portals, and Water Droplets to replenish health. Vikki's lion mount Leo can also be called on temporarily after finding a Leo Head icon, and the ride can last five seconds longer once a Leg of Lamb is eaten. Each level ends after entering a portal.
