Night time is the right time in Night Driver, a high-speed racing game that one-ups the arcade original by adding obstacles in the form of oncoming cars. In addition, there are trees and houses along the roadside (beyond the fencing). Players have 90 seconds to cover as much distance as possible on one of four different tracks: novice, pro, expert, and random. Another variation allows players to drive without a time limit on an infinitely long track. The paddle controller ably steps in as the steering wheel while the fire button is the gas pedal. Difficulty switches allow for variances in the top speed of the car and dictate whether or not oncoming cars will honk before they appear. The car players drive is absurdly simplistic in appearance, but the trees, houses and oncoming cars have more detail. The fencing marking the roadway keeps the course twisting and turning at a rapidly smooth pace, giving the game an effective pseudo-3D look. Realistic (relatively speaking) sound effects add to the fun.
