U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) personnel have assessed trace-metal concentrations in sediments and sediment-dwelling species since 1977 at an intertidal site in the vicinity of the discharge of the Palo Alto Regional Water Quality Control Plant (PARWQCP). They have also profiled that area's benthic community structure since 1974. Ancillary biotic and abiotic factors that could affect metal concentrations and benthic community structure (exotic species invasions, pelagic food availability, and weather amalies) have also been measured during this time.
