Brian De Palma directed this first instalment of the action thriller franchise that rebooted the American TV series (which ran from 1966 to 1973). Tom Cruise stars as agent Ethan Hunt, a member of America's elite IMF team (the undercover spies of the Impossible Mission Force; not the financiers of the International Monetary Fund). Hunt and some colleagues are sent to Prague to protect a group of undercover agents' identities, and to reveal who within the IMF has turned traitor. But things go disastrously wrong and most of the team are massacred. As the sole survivor, Hunt must prove his innocence and unmask the traitor before he is terminated by his own government. And thus begins a top-class, high-octane chase thriller, packed with jaw-dropping special effects and stunts.
