SynopsisTreasure! For many an adventure-seeker, this is the single most magical word in the English language. And what better place to discover treasure than the Canadian West, a region steeped in legends of lost riches left behind by gold prospectors and outlaws from days past. In the second Lost Bonanzas , Garnet Basque continues his review of famous sites, from the coast and Interior of British Columbia to Dawson City, Yukon, where lost treasures are said to lie waiting for discovery. The legends in this volume have stood the test of time, but are they real or imagined? Follow the evidence for and against in this fascinating collection that is sure to stir the adventurous spirit within. Also available, The Lost Bonanzas of Western Canada, Volume 1 ., Eleven stories of lost mines, outlaw loot and buried or sunken treasure from British Columbia and the Yukon. THE LOST DRAGON MINE First discovered by three Swedes in 1864 and abandoned when they left to search for richer goldfields, the mine lay undiscovered for three decades. The new discoverer was killed before he could work it, and its location has been eagerly sought ever since. THE FORGOTTEN MINES OF SILVER PEAK MOUNTAIN Do rich silver mines lie forgotten in the mountains south of Hope? According to the story, the mines, first discovered in 1868, yielded rich silver ore until they were closed in 1874. BULLDOG KELLY'S BURIED LOOT In 1884 a whisky salesman was making his way south from Golden with two others when the party was held up by a lone gunman. One man was killed and another wounded, and the gunman netted $4,500. Some locals still believe the outlaw buried the loot near Golden. THE GOLD BOULDER OF KOOTENAY LAKE In 1892 four men supposedly found a boulder of solid gold that they estimated to be worth over $860,000. When they tried to transport the treasure to Nelson, the 2,366-pound boulder crashed through the floorboards of the boat and sank in 400 feet of water. OLD MAN GREEN'S MISSING HOARD Just over 100 years ago, the sandy beach of tranquil Savary Island was bloodied by a shocking double murder. Rumours persist that one of the victims buried his wealth on the island. ATLIN'S LOST ROCKER MINE Did the story of a rich placer creek lead to the discovery of the Atlin goldfields? The tale of an intriguing lost treasure is revealed here for the first time in nearly a century. DAWSON CITY'S OUTLAW LOOT One cold November morning, two masked men held up the Dominion Saloon and made off with $8,000 in gold dust. Although the culprits were eventually caught, the stolen dust was never recovered. SLOCAN LAKE'S LOST SILVER BULLION According to legend, a boxcar loaded with silver bullion, rolling with the motion of a barge during a storm, smashed through the guardrails and vanished into Slocan Lake. THE LOST STRONGBOX OF THE MOUNT ROYAL Ever since she sank in Kitselas Canyon on July 6, 1907, stories circulated that the Mount Royal 's safe went to the bottom, containing $100,000 in gold. THE TREASURE OF THE SS PACIFIC The Pacific sailed from Victoria on November 4, 1875, crammed with freight and over 275 passengers and crew-and $100,000 in gold. Later that night the Pacific and her golden treasure lay on the bottom of the ocean. BROTHER TWELVE'S MISSING GOLD With its blend of black magic, sex and lost gold, the weird but fascinating story of Brother Twelve seems too incredible to be true. But hundreds of bilked disciples who placed their faith and money in his care learned that Brother Twelve was all too real.
