NotesCanada's Gordon Lightfoot parlayed his songwriting into a recording career, though this wasn't a case of a mediocre singer who happened to craft fine songs. His debut album, 'Lightfoot!', was recorded in New York in 1965 with guitarist David Rea and bassist Bill Lee providing the spare acoustic backing for Lightfoot's clear, confident vocals. The songs include such Lightfoot classics as Ribbon Of Darkness, For Lovin' Me, Home From The Forest, and Early Morning Rain. By the time of his second United Artists album, recorded in Nashville in 1967, the 'folk rock' influence was more evident in the production and Lightfoot's ability to write from his regional experience apparent in songs like Canadian Railroad Trilogy.
