Joan of Arc , his last completed novel, is a dream of his childhood, a work of his artistic maturity and, in many ways, a counterpoint to his previous works. The novel was first published in Harper's Magazine under the real name of Mark Twain, Samuel Langhorne Clemens. The pseudonymous author's name, Sieur Louis de Conte, has the same initials as Clemens (SLC), putting the author in the role of Joan's page and secretary. His descriptions of Joan are based on his daughter, Susy, and the novel is dedicated to his wife, Olivia. In short, Joan of Arc has less of the sarcastic Twain and more of the loving Clemens. I like Joan of Arc best of all my books; and it is the best; I know it perfectly well.
