Janes Addiction - The Fans Video - Soul Kiss (VHS, 1989)

About this product

Product Information

While the main purpose of the first home video by Jane's Addiction, Soul Kiss, was to include the uncensored version of their clip for "Mountain Song," it turned into an interesting (and nearly 30-minute long) snapshot of the band around the time of their major-label debut's release, 1989's Nothing's Shocking. While only 1 other full-length song is featured, a Farrell/Navarro acoustic performance of "City," the video is comprised of band interviews and scenes featuring Farrell and then-girlfriend Casey Niccoli (such as the singer shooting off a Roman candle in their bedroom, in the presence of their pet chicken!). Several humorous scenes are included as well -- guitarist Dave Navarro's pet eel, bassist Eric Avery's book report while "sitting on the throne," drummer Stephen Perkins' distaste for a certain kind of fruit, and Farrell's witty answer to an interviewer's question, "Do you like selling records?" The clip for "Mountain Song" isn't as shocking as the MTV censors wanted you to believe -- just a little bit of nudity is featured (when the clip was aired on MTV, the scenes were blocked out). The video's title refers to several scenes throughout the video in which the bandmembers kiss each other, which was a bold move at the time, since it went completely against the testosterone-heavy message of many hard rock/metal bands of the era. ~ Greg Prato
