About this product

Product Information

A portrait of an often mysterious and elusive culture. A collection of poetry written by Japanese elementary school-children, it offers the freshness and immediacy that characterizes children's observations of the world around them as well as a perspective on Japan in both its traditional and modern guises. The poems are accompanied by 78 illustrations representing the wide scope of Japanese art. The images - which include ink paintings, scroll paintings, woodblock prints and more - draw on Japan's aesthetic traditions and offer a complement to the poems. The poems were originally printed as a daily feature in Japan's leading newspaper, Yomiuri Shimbun , which chose from thousands of works sent in by parents and teachers across the country. More than 100 of the poems have w been selected and translated by Bru Navasky, an American poet who has worked with children in both Japan and America.
