Far Gate features three distinct races, 16 single-player missions, and gameplay ranging from base management to space combat. As Jacob Viscero, you control Terran colonization of the Proxima Centauri system, collecting energy and building materials from asteroid fields to create structures and vessels for expansion and survival. Battles include explosions and dynamic lighting effects, with full 3D effects for cameras and ships, though some areas of space are more planar to facilitate organization and strategy. The storyline is one of betrayal and revenge, with hostile alien factions thrown into the mix for good measure. The hideous Nue-Guyen wield built-in biological threats, while the Entrodii employ devastating energy weapons capable of destroying enemy vessels in a single blast. All three races have unique attributes, strengths, and weaknesses, but only the Terran race is playable in single-player mode. Single-player stages contain unique goals, such as building a certain number of structures, destroying specific targets, or eliminating enemy ships and structures. The navigational system allows you to control several situations simultaneously by tracking different units and structures through a series of movable windows. No skirmish mode is provided, but unlimited level replay is optional. Six multiplayer maps are available for play over a LAN or the Internet, with matching services provided by GameSpy and Mplayer. A campaign editor is also included.
