In Dominant Species, an under-hyped but highly innovative entry in the Real Time Strategy arena, you control the Mindlord and 27 unique alien creatures (units) in a fierce battle to rid their world of pesky invaders -- humans. Featuring a campaign of 20 missions, resource management, base building, steady unit improvement, and real-time combat, Dominant Species quietly earned its niche among a handful of RTS titles whose gameplay far exceeded its promise. Overshadowed and perhaps somewhat ignored due to the RTS successes of Command & Conquer and WarCraft in preceding years, Dominant Species features standard gameplay elements mixed with humor, imaginative graphics, a simple but customizable interface, solid storyline, and 3D acceleration to capture the essence of a world in chaos. While the world is huge, the requirement to maintain a base and improve units is kept manageable by the simple expedient of most units being derivatives of several basic unit types. Two major unit types, engineers and warriors, include attack, armor, damage absorption (hit points), and speed ratings, all of which improve with experience. As the names imply, engineers are used to gather Anima, the "lifeblood" of the alien culture and perform building tasks, while warriors mainly carry out combat missions. The "twist" occurs when the indigenous hives have to interrupt their millennia of tribal survival warfare, a normal state of existence, to fight against the invading humans who want Anima as a means to perpetuate immortality. Featuring 360-degree freedom of movement, strategic and tactical warfare with variable formations, collectible power-up shards, adjustable camera angles, creative creatures, and clever animation, Dominant Species is a lost gem in a minefield of clones.
