About this product

Product Information

A hard-rock band that paved the way for metal bands to come, England's Deep Purple formed in 1968 with the original lineup of Richie Blackmore, Rod Evans, Nick Semper, Jon Lord, and Ian Paice. Their first album was a somewhat pop-oriented affair, followed by forays into prog-rock with near-orchestral flourishes. But the 1970 arrival of singer Ian Gillian witnessed a heavier rock approach that culminated with the metal classic MACHINE HEAD in 1972 (though he departed the band the following year). This documentary offers a critical review of Deep Purple's recorded output during these formative years through archival footage and interviews with critics, musicologists, and related musicians, including Doogie White of Blackmore's later band Rainbow, Neil Murray of Whitesnake, Malcolm Dome of Total Rock, and members of Procol Harum and Mostly Autumn. Mostly Autumn closes the proceedings with a cover of Deep Purple's most well-known song, "Smoke on the Water."
