The first of a two volume set studying the floating fortress, the battleship, from its birth to its modern uses. This first part begins with the original idea that steam propelled ships could be used in battle. The British Navy was apprehensive about using them, fearing they would make the beautiful wooden ships that were the pride of the Naval force obsolete. The change would occur, though, and soon fleets in Russia, America, Italy, and Japan were all using these fighting vessels.
