Health authorities are now transferring residential provision for people with learning disabilities and local authorities and voluntary organizations are emerging a lead provisioners of care. This is resulting in practitioners working within a mix of services and has resulted in a number of health care professionals working in the social care setting. In addition, the skill mix of practitioners has changed as a direct result of employers increasing their support for vocational training. This has seen a decrease in qualified nurses and residential social workers and an increase in support staff who have achieved National Vocational Qualifications at level I and II. The is no specific NVQ for staff working with people with learning disabilities therefore a key component of each chapter in this text is a summary section that offers activities to help the reader and assessor incorporate the performance criteria within their practice.
