Battle Beast is a well-intentioned but badly realized attempt to "lighten up" on the theme so prevalent in most standard genre toe-to-toe fighting games. Instead of humans, malfunctioning combat machines, originally meant for use as personal security systems, battle one another instead of the foes they were meant to eradicate: toads. Featuring six models of fighters, each with a "soft" cute side resembling a normal pet (dog, fish, turtle, and so forth) as well as a heavily plated and armed "morphed" aspect, Battle Beast utilizes a cartoon motif with bright, gaudy colors and backgrounds. Although the concept is commendable, actual gameplay suffers from poor design.<br><br>With only a few frames dedicated to each move, animations are jerky, giving you no warning or chance to dodge or block when an opponent tries to hit you. Action is further debilitated by the oft-experienced split-second delay between the time the keystroke and its corresponding move occur on screen, resulting in misses and awkward positioning. Battle Beast fulfills the designers' vision to eliminate the "normal" fare of multi-ethnic bad guys trying to eviscerate one another, but fails to achieve playability with bad execution and a silly plot involving a madman's attempt to flood the city with toads.
