Product Information
His name is synonymous with hate crimes and he has become the poster boy for tolerance. A&E documents the tragedy that moved a nation in American Justice: Matthew Shepard -- Death in the High Desert. As a young gay man living in rural Wyoming, Shepard stuck out. But, he seemed to be functioning well with a small group of friends and a loving family. But, on the night of October 6, 1998, while visiting a bar in Laramie, Shepard came across two men around his age. They invited him to their truck to talk and proceeded to rob him. With the end of a gun, one of the men struck Shepard several times in the head. After a vicious beating, they drove to a secluded field where they took his shoes and tied him to a fencepost. Shepard was found 18 hours later with massive trauma to the brain. He died five days afterwards. The men were caught and sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. But, more importantly, their act of hatred sparked a national debate on the nature of violent bias. A&E remembers that cold murderous night and the actions that came as a result of it. ~ Sarah Ing, RoviProduct Identifiers
