ReviewsFour days before Christmas in 1988, Pan American Flight 103 took off from Heathrow Airport in London. With 243 passengers and sixteen crewmembers aboard, Flight 103 was bound for the United States. Shortly after take off, while flying over the Scottish town of Lockerbie, the plane was literally blown to pieces. Fiery debris from the plane crashed down to earth in and around Lockerbie, killing eleven town residents. All 259 travelers on Flight 103 perished in what was eventually found to be a terrorist act. Over time, and after a painstaking criminal investigation, suspicion fell upon two men linked to the Libyan government. After United Nations sanctions were imposed, Libya's leader, Moammar Khadafy, agreed to the extradition and trial of the two accused bombers. Ultimately, in January 2001, one of the two men, Abdel Baset al-Megrahi, was found guilty of murder and is currently serving a life sentence in Scotland. The tragic story of Pan Am Flight 103 and its destruction in the skies over Lockerbie is ably chronicled in this illustrated book. Author Karen Spies both reconstructs the events that happened in the sky and the complex legal search that ensued. The author also does an excellent job of detailing the emotional impact the Pan Am attack had upon the surviving families of the innocent victims of this attack. This is a thoughtful book and one that is very appropriate at a time when terrorism plays so great a role in our world., Children's Literature
