Product Information
Andrzej Wajda's first film--and the opening segment of his World War II trilogy--A GENERATION, set in Wola, a working-class section of Warsaw, tells the stories of two young men at odds with the German occupation of Poland. Stach (Tadeusz Lomnicki) engages in small, somewhat aimless acts of rebellion, such as petty theft from the German army's coal supply. He goes to work for a German firm and finds among the factory workers a nascent leftish underground organization. He decides to join and finds himself falling in love with the brave and beautiful Dorota (Urszula Modrzynska), the leader of the group, just as she is coming under intense scrutiny from the Gestapo. A second episode focuses on Jasio Krone (Tadeusz Janczar), the temperamental son of an artisan. Initially reluctant to join the struggle, he finally commits himself fully, running relief operations in the ghetto, one step ahead of his Nazi pursuers.A film of considerable power, A GENERATION features a gritty realism that proved to be a breakthrough for Polish cinema, and its skillful mise-en-scčne heralded the arrival of a new auteur. As Roman Polanski (who has a supporting role in Wajda's debut) has said, "For us it was a film of tremendous importance. The whole Polish cinema began with it."Product Identifiers
