Product Information
After the difficulties the Treasury faced with the US Buffalo nickel for its 25-year term, they quickly worked to replace it with the US Jefferson nickel in 1938. A competition was held to see who could come with up with the greatest design for the new copper-nickel coin, which required specifically that Thomas Jefferson's head and his home Monticello be included. Felix Schlag won the competition, and went on to create the original design for the US Jefferson nickel. The obverse side of the 1976 five-cent piece features Thomas Jefferson's head and bust, with the phrase "In God We Trust" to the left and the word "Liberty" with the date of production of 1976 to the right of Jefferson's head. The initials "FS" are included below Jefferson's bust to honor the designer of the copper-nickel coin as well. The reverse side of the US Jefferson nickel contains Jefferson's home of Monticello. The 1976 five-cent piece weighs 0.18 oz, measures .084 inches in diameter, and features plain edges all around the perimeter of the coin.Product Key Features
