It's the year 2020, and baseball has changed. The stadium is now designed so that the home run zone is only a narrow strip in the middle of center field; the rest of the spectator stands are covered by transparent glass and are considered part of the field. Additionally some parts of the stadium that have been traditionally designated foul territory are now considered fair territory. <br><br>After several innings of play, mines are automatically placed on the field; when stepped on, the mines won't kill players but will instead damage them and degrade their performance. As the game progresses, more and more mines are laid on the field. The final change to the field is a series of jump boost squares scattered around the outfield. If a fielder stands in one of the squares and jumps, he or she can get boosted to great heights, enabling him or her to make extraordinary catches.<br><br>The players have changed along with the game. Men, women, and even robots now compete alongside each other. Human players are outfitted with powered armor that enhances their performance, while robots come in different varieties of skill and ability. During the game good plays like strikeouts or home runs are rewarded with cash bonuses to the team, while sloppy playing can penalize the team's cash reserves. <br><br>Money can be used to buy temporarily upgraded armor for human players, or to replace existing human or robot players with better models. Human players, especially the pitcher, tire over time and become less effective. Robot players on the other hand degrade mechanically over time until they explode.<br><br>Players can choose from two leagues in 2020 Super Baseball. Each league has its own set of teams to play with and against. Players can select either a Single Match or the League Mode in which they must guide their team against every other team in the league repeatedly.
