Ausgangspunkt der Arbeit war die Erkenntnis, dass es der bisherigen wissenschaftlichen Beschaauml;ftigung mit dem Puppenspiel und seiner Geschichte an theoretischer Reflexion der Methoden und des Gegenstandes mangelte. Ausgehend von einer wissenschaftshistorischen Sichtung bisheriger Puppenspielhistoriographie will die Arbeit ein Umschreiben der Geschichte des Puppenspiels zu einer Sozial- und Kulturgeschichte anregen. Betrachtet werden die historischen Ursachen fuuuml;r die Setzung des Puppenspiels als Kunst im 19. und 20. Jahrhundert. Mit einem begriffsgeschichtlichen Ansatz werden Adaptionen verschiedener Erscheinungsformen des Puppenspiels in differenten historischen asthetischen Kontexten verfolgt. Mit dem neuen Blick auf das Puppenspiel soll eine Diskussion uber die Methodologie von Puppenspielhistoriographie im Kontext der Theaterwissenschaft angeregt werden.
