The books are arranged in alphabetical order by topics such as immigration, famous Americans, maps, slavery, animation, child labor and advertising. Each section begins with a teacher page that lists URLs and activities, followed by reproducible activity pages. Rather than being strictly question and answer research questions, many diverse types of activities are included using a great deal of critical thinking and analysis, as well as critical listening and visual observation. Other suggested projects include use of encyclopedias, making posters, writing paragraphs, cinquains, biopoems, and displays.
