As the tutelary Shinto chapel of the powerful Fujiwara family, the shrine reached a height of importance during the Heian period (794-1185 A.D.). At this time, the Fujiwaras were dominant among the aristocracy of the new capital at Kyoto, and Fujiwara ministers of state, Empresses, and regents held sway over the government of the nation. Even after the period of Fujiwara political pre-eminence came to an end, the family still retained a position of great prestige at court; as nearly all Empresses have been members of Fujiwara branch houses, their tutelary shrine has naturally tended to develop many close ties with the Imperial Family.”
