An autobiography by Sir Vivian Fuchs. Born in 1908 in the Isle of Wight, Sir Vivian Fuchs was educated at Brighton College and St John's College, Cambridge, where he qualified as a geologist. Apart from the War years, during which he was commissioned into the Cambridgeshire Regiment and served in West Africa and Normandy, he has spent the whole of his adult life involved in exploration. In 1929 as an undergraduate he went on a summer expedition to Greenland, and this was followed by four expeditions to Africa - in two of which he was the leader. In 1948 he was appointed Field Commander of the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey, now renamed the British Antarctic Survey and from 1955-58 he initiated and led the Commonwealth Trans-Antarctic Expedition which made the first crossing of the continent. For this he received the Special Gold Medal of the Royal Geographical Society and was knighted. For the next 14 years he served as Director of the Survey until his retirement in 1973.
