I found just 5mA through each segment gives adequate brightness (2.0V across segment), so max 40mA per digit constant. 560 ohm x 8 series resistors from 5V supply. Common anode means all segments connect to V+ directly at one end and each segment connects individually to V- at the other. So any segment gets 0V to turn it ON and Vsupply to turn it OFF. If you want 0V OFF and Vsupply ON, then it's common cathode. Recommended.
