Il materiale documentario che si presenta, in buona parte inedito, consente di mettere a fuoco gli interessi e le iniziative di alcuni membri di una delle più importanti dinastie nel panorama italiano dell'età moderna. Accanto al duca Cesare, che per assicurarsi stabilità politica dopo la Devoluzione di Ferrara (1598) donò opere d'arte all'imperatore Rodolfo II e ai potenti cardinali romani, e una volta a Modena trasformò l'antico castello cittadino nel nuovo palazzo ducale, assume rilievo la figura del fratello, cardinale Alessandro, noto mecenate e collezionista, per il quale il "Carteggio degli Ambasciatori di Roma" offre notizie sulla formazione e l'incremento della raccolta di opere d'arte e le vicende che questa subì ...
