Synopsis
This study looks at two Veronese daily newspapers - »L'Arena« and »L'Adige« - in the period following the unification of Italy with the aim of casting new light on the evolution of non-literary written Italian in the second half of the nineteenth century. The discussion proceeds on the traditional lines of linguistic inquiry but also focuses on a number of aspects that transcend morphological, syntactic and lexical analysis and are specific to journalistic language and the development of the written vernacular in the 19th century. The picture that emerges is characterised on the one hand by the introduction of new elements into standard Italian stemming from various sources (Manzoni, neologisms, special languages, colloquial language, dialect) and on the other by the evolution of a journalistic idiom that was to influence the development of Italian in the aftermath., The book series Beihefte zur Zeitschrift für romanische Philologie is among the most renowned publications in Romance Studies. It covers the entire field of Romance linguistics, including the national languages as well as the lesser studied Romance languages. The series publishes high-quality monographs and collected volumes on all areas of linguistic research, on medieval literature and on textual criticism., La presenza di studi paralleli sulla lingua di quotidiani coevi pubblicati in altre localit italiane e l'impostazione stessa dell'analisi, svolta su un corpus di due annate distanziate di vent'anni (1866/67 e 1886/87), permettono di operare dei confronti sui piani diatopico e diacronico che mettono in risalto lo stato e le tendenze della lingua giornalistica ottocentesca. Nella sostanza i mezzi espressivi dei quotidiani postunitari s'inseriscono sullo sfondo di una scrittura comune, campo d'interazioni e dinamiche linguistiche cosi sintetizzabili: 1. persistenza dei modi della lingua della tradizione letteraria e contemporaneo accoglimento dei fermenti innovativi osteggiati dai puristi ottocenteschi; 2. continua escursione fra toni alti, spesso altissimi, e toni bassi, raramente bassissimi; 3. oscillazione fra varianti morfonologiche, sintattiche, lessicali e tendenza alla loro stabilizzazione nella direzione di semplificazione e svecchiamento; 4. formazione e affermazione di moduli linguistici e paralinguistici tipici del linguaggio giornalistico. I rari scarti notati nella lingua dei giornali veronesi rispetto alla lingua di quelli di citt meno periferiche (in particolare di Milano) consistono in una maggior rigidezza e nella tensione a non scendere all'uso di forme pi libere e aderenti al parlato locale, per non rivelare il provincialismo che pesa sulla citt veneta (territorio decaduto dal periodo luminoso della Serenissima Repubblica di Venezia) da poco entrata a far parte della compagine nazionale. Ma nella progressione diacronica si assiste ad una maggior disinvoltura da parte dei giornalisti veronesi nel maneggiare la lingua, cosi che le ampollose forme letterarie si attenuano e lasciano pi spazi a forme dell'uso vivo, anche dialettali. L'aver esaminato due annate separate da un ventennio si dimostra altrettanto proficuo per l'individuazione dello sviluppo e dell'affermazione di aspetti specifici dello stile giornalistico, come risulta evidente nel capitolo dedicato allo stile che analizza, tra l'altro, le tecniche di strutturazione del testo (procedimenti congiuntivi e procedimenti aggiuntivi), lo stile 'obiettivizzante', i titoli., The book series Beihefte zur Zeitschrift für romanische Philologie, founded by Gustav Gröber in 1905, is among the most renowned publications in Romance Studies.
