"In her portraits of people, Didion is not out to expose but to understand, and she shows us actors and millionaires, doomed brides and naive acid-trippers, left wing ideologues and snobs of the Hawaiian aristocracy in a way that makes them neither villainous nor glamorous, but alive and botched and often mournfully beautiful . . . A rich display of some of the best prose written today in this country."--Dan Wakefield, The New York Times Book Review, In her portraits of people, Didion is not out to expose but to understand, and she shows us actors and millionaires, doomed brides and naive acid-trippers, left wing ideologues and snobs of the Hawaiian aristocracy in a way that makes them neither villainous nor glamorous, but alive and botched and often mournfully beautiful . . . Synopsis
Celebrated, iconic, and indispensable, Joan Didion's first work of nonfiction, Slouching Towards Bethlehem , is considered a watershed moment in American writing. First published in 1968, the collection was critically praised as one of the "best prose written in this country." More than perhaps any other book, this collection by one of the most distinctive prose stylists of our era captures the unique time and place of Joan Didion's focus, exploring subjects such as John Wayne and Howard Hughes, growing up in California and the nature of good and evil in a Death Valley motel room, and, especially, the essence of San Francisco's Haight-Ashbury, the heart of the counterculture. As Joyce Carol Oates remarked: "[Didion] has been an articulate witness to the most stubborn and intractable truths of our time, a memorable voice, partly eulogistic, partly despairing; always in control.", The first nonfiction work by one of the most distinctive prose stylists of our era, Joan Didion's Slouching Towards Bethlehem remains, decades after its first publication, the essential portrait of America--particularly California--in the sixties. It focuses on such subjects as John Wayne and Howard Hughes, growing up a girl in California, ruminating on the nature of good and evil in a Death Valley motel room, and, especially, the essence of San Francisco's Haight-Ashbury, the heart of the counterculture.

That was very appreciated, thank U; Also, it was reasonably priced, thus making it affordable; Mailed in a bubble-wrap envelope, & the item was in shrink-wrap; The appearance was pristine! - 2***b (591)- Feedback left by buyer.Past monthVerified purchaseThis was as pictured. The other item in the same shipment was not the edition and cover ordered and I was very disappointed about that. Looking at other recent reviews it seems other buyers have the same complaints - they send you any old cover and not the one you wanted and chose specifically because of their photo. Second frequent comment is true too - very flimsy packaging, but the books were fine. I'd say if you want a specific cover do NOT order from this seller. Otherwise fine.
- e***0 (88)- Feedback left by buyer.Past monthVerified purchase5 Star Seller. Fast processing, book exactly as described in the description, price was excellent, packed well with care to protect from rain, shipped via USPS and arrived undamaged. Would definitely buy from this seller again. Thank you
