Reviews
Empire - There is plenty of action [...] Del Toro's fondness for the macabre, and for clockwork, colour this film in a way that's instantly recognisable., Chicago Sun-Times - It's vibrating with energy, and you can sense the zeal and joy in its making., Sight and Sound - The bad guys have great looks [...] HELLBOY succeeds because it brings the visuals from the page to life with a beating red heart., The Guardian - HELLBOY II is a movie that's a tingling boost to the senses: and that sense of humour is such a stimulus to the other five., The Times - With Hellboy II, the comic-book blockbuster has finally grown up ù without giving up the fairy-tale wonders of our youth., Los Angeles Times - There's no shortage of slick special effects and rampaging monsters here. Yet what catches the eye and captures the imagination is the lovingly hand-crafted feel of the design.
Consumer Advice
Contains moderate fantasy violence and infrequent strong language
Additional Information
Based on the comic book series by Mike Mignola, Guillermo del Toro's gleefully eccentric films follow the supernatural adventures of Hellboy (Ron Perlman), a cigar-chomping, horn-filing demonic hero enlisted by an occult scholar (John Hurt) to fight evil in the Bureau of Paranormal Research and Defense. Along with the fire-throwing Liz Sherman (Selma Blair) and the amphibious psychic Abe Sapien (Doug Jones) Hellboy is called upon to save mankind from other-worldly threats. In the first film this threat comes from the villainous Rasputin (Karl Roden), who unleashes a monster leading to events that may set off an apocalyptic nightmare for humanity. In its sequel THE GOLDEN ARMY, the red-skinned demon hero must face off against a new nemesis called 'the Prince' (Luke Goss), a dastardly villain who is hellbent on summoning an army of dark forces in order to create a rebellion against humanity and conquer the planet.
