L'Étonnante Aventure de la mission Barsac est un roman publié en 1919 sous le nom de Jules Verne, mais écrit par son fils Michel Verne à partir d'un manuscrit de son père nommé Voyage d'étude. Le roman raconte une expédition en Afrique dans la boucle du fleuve Niger. Au début du 20e siècle, une mission parlementaire française est envoyée en Guinée pour déterminer si la population autochtone est à même de se voir accorder le droit de vote. Rejointe par un couple de Britanniques à la recherche d'un membre de leur famille, l'expédition s'enfoncera dans les terres avant d'être capturée par les hommes de Harry Killer, un mégalomane qui a créé en plein désert un "phalanstère esclavagiste": Blackland... Le dernier "voyage extraordinaire" de Jules Verne, achevé par son fils, est présenté ici, pour la première fois, avec le texte du manuscrit qui a servi à son élaboration, Voyage d'études. Une lecture d'Antoine Tshitungu en éclaire les lignes idéologiques les plus surprenantes: comme si, chargé d'achever l'oeuvre, Michel Verne avait repris à rebrousse-poil la pensée de son père en mettant à mal les certitudes et la bonne foi de l'homme blanc...
