Synopsis
The acclaimed author presents his unique insights into the works of great Russian authors including Tolstoy, Dostoevsky, Gogol, Gorky, and Chekhov. In the 1940s, when Vladimir Nabokov first embarked on his academic career in the United States, he brought with him hundreds of original lectures on the authors he most admired. For two decades those lectures served as the basis for Nabokov's teaching, first at Wellesley and then at Cornell, as he introduced undergraduates to the delights of great fiction. This volume collects Nabokov's famous lectures on nineteenth-century Russian literature, with analysis and commentary on Nikolay Gogol's Dead Souls and "The Overcoat"; Ivan Turgenev's Fathers and Sons ; Maxim Gorky's "On the Rafts"; Leo Tolstoy's Anna Karenina and The Death of Ivan Ilych ; two short stories and a play by Anton Chekhov; and several works by Fyodor Dostoevsky, including Crime and Punishment , The Idiot , and The Possessed . This volume also includes Nabokov's lectures on the art of translation, the nature of Russian censorship, and other topics. Featured throughout the volume are photographic reproductions of Nabokov's original notes. "This volume . . . never once fails to instruct and stimulate. This is a great Russian talking of great Russians."--Anthony Burgess Introduction by Fredson Bowers, The acclaimed author presents his unique insights into the works of great Russian authors including Tolstoy, Dostoevsky, Gogol, Gorky, and Chekhov., The acclaimed author presents his unique insights into the works of great Russian authors including Tolstoy, Dostoevsky, Gogol, Gorky, and Chekhov. - _***a (24)- Feedback left by buyer.Past monthVerified purchaseItem was shipped quickly, and was securely packaged. Items was in at least as good a condition as described; it may actually be in better condition than described, as the book looks almost new and unread. Given the great condition of the book, the price was an exceptional value. Furthermore, I made contact with the seller with a query; and, they got back to me very quickly, and were able to answer all my questions. Overall, a great transaction. I would buy from this seller again. Thanks!
- l***i (231)- Feedback left by buyer.Past monthVerified purchaseThe book arrived as described and as pictured. It shipped quickly, but was shipped in only a plastic bag mailer, so not much protection. I will also forewarn, the seller does not answer questions about the specific condition of a book. I know because I asked if two different books had any writing in the margins and received the same pre-generated response both times declining to answer. Despite this, I would still recommend this seller if you are willing to shoulder that risk buying used books
- i**** (3653)- Feedback left by buyer.Past monthVerified purchaseQuick ship and excellent communication. As described in listing. Hardback book a good value for the money. It was packaged in a very thin plastic covering with no padding. The book was fine and not damaged. Delivered on time. I ordered from this seller over the last couple of years. I like to read Beatrice Small's books. A+
