Obwohl ein Gericht bereits 2010 seine Freilassung angeordnet hat, bleibt er bis Ende 2016 inhaftiert. Sein ergreifender Bericht ist die bisher einzige bekannte Chronik eines Guantanamo-Gefangenen, die in der Haft verfasst wurde. Slahis Gefangenschaft dokumentiert fast ein ganzes Jahrzehnt des Kampfes gegen den weltweiten Terrorismus. Donald Rumsfeld - mit der Akte »Slahi« vertraut - autorisierte die Behörden, den mutmaßlichen Al-Qaida-Verschwörer intensiven Verhören zu unterziehen - und nahm dabei auch Folterungen in Kauf. Im Jahr 2005 begann Slahi seine Geschichte zu erzählen. Emotional und zugleich um Fairness bemüht, berichtet er von seinen Entführungen durch die Geheimdienste, den Folterungen und den Begegnungen mit seinen Peinigern, aber auch mit Menschen, die sich ihm zuwandten. Der erste Bericht eines Guantanamo-Gefangenen, dessen offizielle Freigabe durch jahrelange juristische Anstrengungen erzwungen wurde.
