About this product
Product Information
Struck ten years before the last year of the Mercury dime’s production, this 1935 silver coin can be the perfect addition to any coin collection. The designer of the Silver Mercury Dime series, Adolph A. Weinman, was a naturalized citizen of the U.S. who was born in Germany, immigrated at a young age, and become a successful artist. It has a face value of 10 cents, but the average value is $3, and certified mint states in good condition could have a value up to $370. The 1935-S Mercury dime is 90 percent silver and 10 percent copper, and it displays a mintmark on its reverse side showing the coin’s origin at the U.S. Mint in San Francisco. In 1935 the mintage at the San Francisco Mint for the Mercury dime was 15,840,000. This is a small quantity for this year, which can improve the value and increase its price. The year with the lowest mintage was the 1916-D Mercury dime, with 264,000 coins struck at the Denver Mint. The silver Mercury dime features a left facing, winged liberty head with the word "Liberty" inscribed along the top ridge and "In God We Trust" under the chin and above the neckline. Underneath the backside of the winged head is the mint year, and it has an indented border to reduce wear on the coin, which decreases the silver coin’s value. The reverse side shows some Roman fasces, which is a bunch of branches with an ax in the middle wrapped with an olive branch. "United States of America" runs above the fasces, and "One Dime" is engraved underneath it. This coin’s name is a nickname that came from confusion over the image. Many thought the winged head was the Roman god Mercury. The official name for this coin is the Winged Liberty Head. Production of the first silver Mercury dimes began in June 1916 and ended in 1945 with a mintage of 2,676,523,880 coins. During this time, there was a total of 77 unique prints made between the U.S. Mints in Denver, Philadelphia, and San Francisco. Unlike the Barber Collection, this series didn’t produce any nickels, quarters, or half dollars. However, the Mercury Collection was in circulation longer than the Barber coins. When grading the 1935 silver Mercury dime, the most valuable coins are uncirculated. However, even pennies, nickels, dimes, quarters, half dollars, and single gold coin dollars that never went into circulation have scratches. These scratches are more visible on the larger coins, such as quarters, 50 cent pieces, and single dollars. Whether this is your first coin or 100th, the Mercury dime can be a great ten cent silver piece to add to your coin collection.
