Nach Adler wird die Psyche durch ein unbewusstes Streben strukturiert. Dieses fundamentale Prinzip allen menschlichen Lebens zielt auf Uberlegenheit, um den Mangel der menschlichen Existenz zu uberwinden. Durch eine Anstrengung des Willens zur Macht wird ein Gefuhl von Autorschaft uber das eigene Leben erzielt. Die unterschiedlichen Merkmale des individuellen Selbst- und Lebenskonzepts sind konkrete Realisierungen des Lebensstils. Adlers Menschenbild ist von Grund auf optimistisch, da es aus seiner Sicht fur jeden Menschen moglich ist, die Mangelsituationen zu uberwinden oder zu kompensieren. Der einzelne Mensch wird stets in seiner Beziehung zum Mitmenschen, zur Natur und zum Kosmos betrachtet. Die individuelle Personlichkeit lasse sich nicht durch eine Bestandsaufnahme der Symptome oder Charakterzuge erfassen, sondern man musse das Wesen der Person intuitiv erahnen. Adler suchte danach, die Einzigartigkeit des Selbst durch den Modus seiner Bewegung, durch sein Bewegungsgesetz zu verstehen.
