As America slowly relaxed its moral codes in the postwar era, pulp novels offered an initiation into the previously hidden demimondes of sex and hedonistic excess. While their cover blurbs feigned shock and disgust, the lurid jackets reveled in illicit danger and excitement. Prominent in America's gallery of evil were teenagers and drug addicts. Together, they threatened to overrun respectable society and drag the country into a pit of vice from which it would never emerge.
