About this product

Product Information

Words and where they came from. Words change, they emigrate and immigrate, they arrive with invading armies and embrace changing fashions; they amend their spelling as they roam across the centuries and languages. This book delves into their origins, their meanings and their changing habits. Some imagination is occasionally required to understand their peripatetic habits but bear with them and you will find many surprises and also, very often, explanations so simple that it is fun to have it explained. Remember that many of these wordy journeys took place before it was common practice to write things down so, as they moved from language to language and from dialect to dialect, the sound varied slightly and when eventually pen was put to paper, the result often bore little resemblance to the origin. Their progress from ancient parchment to modern spell checker, has therefore been varied, unplanned and often unrecorded but as they wandered casually through the languages of the world stopping off here, picking up a new spelling there, they invariably retained a little bit of their history and this book explains the origins of over 1300 English words taken from 100 other languages.

Chiron media provide a great service. It arrived promptly in decent condition considering the edition. There was a small issue with the advertised edition of the book and the one I received. However when I spoke to the seller, they were courteous, understanding and were equitable in their approach to resolving my query. This book was great value for money. I would definitely recommend the quality service provided by this seller.

Excellent experience, these are probably the best large bookseller warehouse on eBay , their customer service is personal and responsive and they endeavour to make sure the buyers experience is a good one . Despatched promptly, and this time it was a paperback so it was ok in a polythene envelope. If you are purchasing a heavy hardback , I suggest contacting them in advance, and hopefully they will have implemented robust cardboard packaging to ensure it doesn't get damaged in the post.

Goods as described and good communication thanks. Royal Mail let the seller down by not delivering on time. Royal mail messaged me on three different days to say the goods out for delivery but never turned up. Post persons apparently pick and choose when and what they want to deliver in a rural area. No fault of seller.
