Synopsis
In October 1917 members of the 4th Australian Light Horse Brigade took part in what is now known as the 'last great cavalry charge'. Waving bayonets overhead, they charged across six kilometres of open ground, cheating bombs, shells and bullets before capturing, in a desperate hand-to-hand battle, the Turkish trenches that held the key to the strategic stronghold of Beersheba. The charge was the last daring act of a day-long fight by combined British forces to capture Beersheba, and also a turning point in Britain's war against the Ottoman Empire, sending the Turks fleeing north to ultimate defeat. Yet the story has slipped through the cracks of history. Journalist Paul Daley's journey in search of Beersheba takes him from Australia to Israel, from past to present, and from the battlefields to the archives, where he discovers a dark episode in Australian history that sits starkly at odds with the Anzac myth and legend. For Daley, the Beersheba of then and now comes to take on new meaning. Book jacket., Blending the past with the present, this well-researched study delves into the mystery surrounding the forgotten Battle of Beersheba, a gloriously successful battle that led to the liberation of Jerusalem and the fall of the Ottoman Empire. This record recounts how Australian and New Zealand Army Corps captured Beersheba and helped to pave the way for the founding of Israel. Documenting the last light-horse charge ever made in battle through soldiers' diaries and descendents, this history details the story of a unique conflict during World War I. The Australian and international significance of the Battle of Beersheba are also explored.

- g***z (82)- Feedback left by buyer.Past monthVerified purchaseThe book was very well packaged for shipping and arrived without any damage. It is in very good condition and exactly as described in the listing. However, I did not do sufficient research in regard to the price. The book sold new by the ARRL is about $7 less than what I paid, which was about 25% under the original asking price. All this is on me because I agreed to the offer. Seller communication was very good. I recommend this seller.

Item was shipped quickly and packaged in an almost impenetrable cardboard mailer – nothing was going to damage it! I won't hesitate to order from this seller again. What a fantastic seller!
