Reviews
"It is a lamentable fact that even the most sacred of our actions is liable to and does become invested with the monotony that infects anything that is often repeated. Against the weariness of routine we have to strive continually, and use any and every means to lay by the heels the devil whose particular charge it is to infect souls with this fell disease. Sister Mary Philip has presented us with a new weapon of defence to guard against monotony in our Holy Communions in the shape of a little book of considerations on the invocations of the Litany of the Sacred Heart. The considerations are made suitable for the time of Holy Communion, and furnish food for thought and prayer during those few minutes which are the most precious of our day." (The Irish Monthly, October 1920) "The Bar Convent at York has been the source in recent years of many most valuable additions to English devotional literature, and happily it is a source which shows no signs of running dry. The veteran Mother Mary Loyola herself acts as sponsor to the latest volume that has been issued thence--The Sacred Heart and Mine in Holy Communion--by Sister Mary Philip, who is already responsible for several other treatises of merit. The present book has for sub-title "Thoughts drawn from the Titles of the Sacred Heart and the writings of St. Margaret Mary Alacoque," and the plan of the authoress is to illustrate the litany invocations from the life or writings of the Saint. Thus she has produced a series of meditations well calculated to keep alive in the devout communicant an ever-renewed sense of the infinite value of the Gift received and a desire to return love for love." (The Month, October 1920) "The recent canonization of Blessed Margaret Mary Alacoque makes particularly appropriate the publication of the volume entitled The Sacred Heart and Mine in Holy Communion. These are meditations drawn from the titles of the Sacred Heart and the writings of the Saint herself by Sister Mary Philip of Bar Convent, York. The preface is by Mother Mary Loyola. The meditations will be very helpful for private devo-tion and also for the conduct of the Holy Hour." (The Catholic World, April 1921)
Synopsis
The Sacred Heart and Mine in Holy Communion is a wonderful set of brief meditations on the titles of the Sacred Heart, suitable for Communion or visits to the Blessed Sacrament. Sister Mary Philip entered the Bar Convent in 1905, during Mother Mary Loyola's tenure there as Mistress of Novices. She seems to have followed in her mentor's footsteps, producing over a dozen well-researched books, with a special affection for the Sacred Heart. While presenting each meditation with the help of St. Margaret Mary Alacoque's writings, the overall feel shows the clear influence of Mother Loyola's writing style.
