Title: Madison Co. natives to hold signing for new historical book Author: Staff Writer Publisher: The Jackson Sun Date: 9/13/09 Authors and Madison County natives Linda Higgins and Scott Parish will sign copies of "Madison County," a new pictorial history, at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Bemis Historical Society meeting at the Bemis Mill Village Museum. "Madison County" is part of the "Images of America" series by Arcadia Publishing. The two authors give credit to the Jackson-Madison County Library for the large collection of business pictures and information that started their 20th Century business and history emphasis, but also to the many local people who were interested in preserving the history of their community. Higgins, the official Madison County historian, is a 1960 graduate of South Side High School and a 1964 graduate of the School of Journalism at the University of Tennessee Knoxville. She received a master's degree in political science from the University of Memphis in 1981. She is an active member of the Bemis Historical Society, having written several grants for the preservation of the auditorium that is now the Mill Village Museum. Higgins is a member of the Mid-West Tennessee Genealogical Society, has recently been approved for membership in Daughters of the American Revolution and is a member of the West Tennessee Historical Society. Parish, a children's book author, graduated from Jackson Central-Merry High School in 1983 before entering the United States Army. His return from service brought him home to West Tennessee, where he became involved in many community-oriented projects including leadership positions in the Jackson Adventure Club, Jackson Area Wide Soccer, the Greenbelt Conservancy and multiple fundraising organizations. His current position as president of Lambuth Area Community Association is to guide the state's third-largest homeowners' group and Madison County's largest political action committee.
Synopsis
Madison County became the hub of West Tennessee in the 20th century. Now major highways and rail lines traverse the county and its seat, Jackson. Three railroad companies and industry spawned by the railroads, such as the cotton mill town of Bemis, provided the main sources of employment during the 1900s. As job opportunities abounded, the population grew. Images of America: Madison County features the industrial development, business history, and lives of those people who were touched by this tremendous growth in Jackson and the county's outlying communities during the 20th century.
