Daniel (hebreo: ), el nombre de Daniel significa El que es juzgado por Dios o Dios ha juzgado asi , o Dios (El) es mi juez . Tambien llamado Beltsasar, era un joven principe judio tomado como prisionero de guerra por las tropas del imperio babilonico en medio de la rebelion por la independencia de Juda. Sirvio al rey Nabucodonosor II y a sus sucesores con lealtad y competencia hasta la conquista de Babilonia por Ciro el Grande, y gracias a la sabiduria de su Dios, Jehova, interpreto los suenos y visiones de los reyes, convirtiendose en una figura prominente en la corte babilonica.No se le considera un profeta en el judaismo, pero los rabinos lo consideraban el miembro mas distinguido de la diaspora babilonica, insuperable en piedad y buenas acciones, firme en su adhesion a la Ley a pesar de estar rodeado de enemigos que buscaban su caida. Daniel es considerado un profeta en el cristianismo, y aunque no se le menciona en el Coran, las fuentes musulmanas lo califican de profeta.El Libro de Daniel fue escrito en una epoca en la que los judios eran oprimidos y perseguidos por los pueblos paganos. El libro se denomina apocaliptico porque trata de acontecimientos relacionados con el fin del mundo (vease Rev. Intr.). Estos acontecimientos se revelan al profeta a traves de visiones y suenos (capitulos 7-12). El profeta trata de explicar al pueblo de Dios por que es perseguido y, al mismo tiempo, le insta a ser fiel a Dios. Porque llegara el dia en que Dios pondra fin al dominio de los gentiles, y una vez mas Israel sera una nacion libre e independiente.
