This 1981 50-cent piece is based on two designs created by ninth and tenth U.S. Mint Chief Engravers Frank Gasparro and Gilroy Roberts in 1963. These designs, featured on the reverse and obverse of this U.S. half dollar, respectively, were created to honor President John F. Kennedy after his assassination. The reverse design on this copper-nickel coin features a bald eagle clutching both a bundle of arrows and an olive branch; the obverse design on this U.S. half dollar by Gilroy Roberts features a bust of President Kennedy. This copper-nickel coin is composed of a copper core and clad in a 75/25 mix of copper and nickel. Weighing 0.4 oz (11.3 g), this 1981 50-cent piece measures 1.2 inches (31 mm) across, making this U.S. half dollar the second-largest coin in circulation, after the rare Eisenhower dollar. Strikes of this U.S. half dollar were run at both the Philadelphia and Denver Mints in 1981.
