"Harris counts from one to twenty with some busy porkers getting ready for a picnic. Authors follow the 'little piggy' baby rhyme for numbers one through five, then 'We, we, we...We STILL aren't done! There are other piggies coming.' And the reader can follow some more pigs through other illustrated activities: flying a plane, juggling tangerines and picking a centerpiece, just for starters. Another surprise comes when they are interrupted by the very hungry Wolf. Ravenous as he is, only 19 have arrived, and he won't eat until he gets all 20. When the oblivious number 20 rings the dinner bell outside, Wolf is no match for 38 stampeding piggy feet heading for the food. They have 'fun and food galore,' while Wolf nurses his aches and studies a book of vegetarian recipes. Variation on the familiar rhyme should tickle very young listeners and Harris's illustrations, combining watercolor and computer graphics, are crisp and simple. While the pigs don't gather collectively until the end, their respective numerals - on shirts, pockets, caps and jewelry - aid in the count-up." --Kirkus Reviews, "While the piggies in the original nursery rhyme number only five, this tale does not end with the unfortunate one who went 'wee, wee, wee/all the way home.' Instead, the imaginative Harris duo envision a new, fun-filled scene and delight readers with the news that 'Fifth little piggy went, 'We, we, we. . . /We STILL aren't done!' The premise of this rhyming counting book is that 20 pigs have been invited to a picnic. Using all modes of transportation, the porcine guests arrive bearing treats, talents, and paraphernalia. What they don't notice is the infamous wolf straight out of 'The Three Little Pigs.' True to form, he craves pork chops and seems destined to have his meal - until he stops to count only 19 porkers. Greed makes him the victim of a stampede when the 20th one, who has been napping, rings the dinner bell. Hilarious color cartoon illustrations show pigs with plenty of personality, each prominently displaying a number while that same number is hidden somewhere on the spread, along with the sneaky wolf. In the spirit of Margie Palatini's Piggie Pie! (Clarion, 1995), this funny story is perfect for one-on-one and group sharing." --School Library Journal

    Synopsis
Nearly everyone has heard about the little piggy that went to the market and the one that stayed home-but there's a lot more to the story! 20 Hungry Piggies completes the tale while, unbeknownst to the reader, teaching an important math concept at the same time. There are many counting books that deal with cardinal numbers (1,2,3,etc), but this book teaches ordinal numbers as well-an important part of the kindergarten math curriculum. As an added bonus, children will have a great time trying to find the hidden wolf and hidden numbers in each spread., Nearly everyone has heard about the little piggy that went to the market and the one that stayed home-but there's a lot more to the story 20 Hungry Piggies completes the tale while, unbeknownst to the reader, teaching an important math concept at the same time.
